Guatemalan Bag: San Juan Sacatepequez Hand Bag

$135.00

This beautiful tote bag was made by combining the huipil pattern from San Juan Sacatepequez with brown leather. The huipil panel is made from 100% cotton that was hand woven on a back strap loom. The patterns of the huipiles are handed down through the generations. The huipiles from San Juan Sacatepequez usually feature the feathered serpent that can be seen on this bag. However, each weaver adds her own signature to whatever she weaves. That means that no two huipiles can ever be exactly alike. A purse made with a Guatemalan huipil panel is definitely an exclusive design.

This bag measures 11 inches deep and 16 inches wide. It has one zipper pocket and the bag itself closes with a zipper.

Additional

All the fabrics on this site are 100% cotton hand-dyed and hand-woven in Guatemala. The regular fabric is 36 inches wide. The fabric is not cut until you buy it. When you order multiple yards, you'll receive your fabric in a continuous piece.

Since these fabrics are hand woven there might be slight imperfections. These are characteristics that make the fabric stand out from machine made fabrics.

The corte pieces are different widths. The width of each one is in the description.

Fabrics should be prewashed before sewing with them. Edges of the fabric should be zigzagged to prevent fraying. Please follow the washing instructions you receive with your fabric. Some fabrics should be washed in cold water with a mild detergent. Others require Retayne. I include detailed instructions on how to use Retayne.

Retayne can be ordered on-line from any number of sites such as Joanne’s or Amazon.
